Brunnsparken, Varberg, Sweden
  Map

During the 19th century, Varberg became a health resort. The tradition dates back to 1811, when Svartekällan by Apelviken south of the city, was first advertised as a well. A well house was built over the spring in 1817, but from 1837 it was found more practical to transport the water to Varberg, where it was served in the well salon in Brunnsparken opposite the church.

The park was fenced with a rice paddock, where parties, concerts and so on were held for the bathing society. Today, Brunnsparken in Varberg is a lively place in the heart of central Varberg. It houses restaurants and bars as well as shops as well as the magnificent church built 1769-1772.

Alongside world-famous attractions such as the Hermitage, St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Mariinsky Theatre, the city has scores of lesser known but equally fascinating sights that reveal both the pomp and extravagance of St. Petersburg's political and Imperial past, and also the mysterious, tragic genius that has touched so many of the city's great artists and writers.

Nevsky Avenue, St. Petersburg, Russia
  Map

Nevsky Prospekt is St. Petersburg's main avenue and one of the best-known streets in Russia. It is the city's central shopping street and the hub of the city's entertainment and nightlife.

Cutting through the historical center of the city, it runs from the Admiralty to the Moscow Railway Station and then to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery.

In the very first days of St. Petersburg it was simply the beginning of the road to the ancient city of Novgorod, but it quickly became adorned with beautiful buildings, squares and bridges and became the very center of the bustling, rapidly growing city.

Nevsky gradually widens as you travel along its length towards the river and is lined with some of St. Petersburg's most impressive buildings.

Kazan Cathedral is on one side and there is a wonderful view down Kanal Griboedova to the picturesque Russian-style Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood. In addition there are many different denomination churches that line Nevsky, which prompted the French writer Alexander Dumas to call it "the street of religious tolerance".

There are numerous other attractions in the area. Just a stone's throw from Nevsky, next door to the Grand Hotel Europe, stands Arts Square and the Russian Museum. Further down the road, you'll find the largest department store in the city - "Gostiny Dvor" and the Russian National Library. There is also an impressive monument to Catherine the Great and the Anichkov Bridge, adorned with 4 striking equestrian statues.

With 3000 years of history, Pula is one of the few cities in the world which features remains of many ancient Roman buildings.

The Forum was and still is, the central meeting point of the ancient city, a space for public gatherings, political acts, religious practices and the core of city life. The Forum was the most important public space, and in architectural, artistic and sculptural way, it was the very central part of the town. Decisions were made here, ambassadors from the ancient city of Rome were hosted in this place, and it was the mirror of the public life of the town.

The porch with it's tall colums was for protecting the people from the rain and the sun, but also as an entrance to all the public and commerce places, which were located in the Forum.

  Map

Have you ever been to a city centre in the middle of the sea?

The city of Kristiansund is situated on four different islands. But don’t worry – in minutes, the tiny ferry Sundbåten will take you between Kirkelandet, Innlandet, Nordlandet and Gomalandet. Ask the skipper to let you off at the Milnbrygga wharf, where you can visit the Norwegian Clipfish Museum. Located in a house from 1787, it is one of the most unique eateries in town. Speaking of food from the region – you need to try the award-winning cheeses from Tingvollost, especially “Kraftkar”, which has been named the world’s best cheese!

Join the annual food festival Snadderfestivalen in June to really dig into the local food, drink the local craft beers, and taste the local aquavit, which is made on potatoes and seaweed.

Did you know that Kristiansund is home to the country’s oldest opera? With more than 100 performances a year, you can always catch a show. Every year in February, they arrange the popular festival Operafestukene, where you get served opera for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 17 days.

You should also join the Nordic Light Festival of Photography, where famous international and Norwegian photographers exhibit their pictures all over town, give lectures, and drink with the locals all through the night.

Daxi Old Street in Taoyuan City, Taiwan | The Heart of Asia

Daxi was the earliest developed area in Taoyuan. Thanks to small sailboats sailing between Dahan Creek and Tamsui River, Daxi had a thriving trade with China, and its prosperity brought success to many stores and businessmen.

During the Japanese occupation period of the Taisho era, Baroque architecture was the popular building style and therefore many stores along Heping Road and Zhongshan Road were built in the Baroque style, but decorated with both Baroque ornamentation and characteristic totems of Min-nan in Southern China. Speciality shops and food stands on the street always attract many tourists.

Damrak, Amsterdam, Netherlands
  Map

Damrak, the red carpet of Amsterdam. The street that is first to be seen at the exit of Amsterdam Central Station. Here you will find large shops, hotels and restaurants. In addition, the Damrak is connected to the parallel busy shopping street the Nieuwendijk. The Damrak runs between Amsterdam Centraal in the north and Dam Square in the south.

The Damrak is the oldest part of Amsterdam. The city at the mouth of the Amstel came into existence here, almost a thousand years ago. The Damrak is still the main gateway for millions of visitors and residents of the city. An upgrade of this area and thus the entrance of the city was one of the most important reasons to start the Red Carpet project in the Centrum district.

Rak is an old Dutch term for a straight canal or river. Until 1672, when most of it was filled, Damrak was Amsterdam’s busiest canal. Ships were docked along its quays — all the way up to Dam square — to unload, and take on board, goods from all over the world.

Today there are nearly two dozen buildings designated as monuments. There’s the old stock exchange, which nowadays hosts a wide variety of cultural events. Closer to Dam square is the huge, prestigious Bijenkorf warehouse attracts bustling crowds of locals and visitors alike.

From the tour boats near Central Station to the interesting architecture along the way, the good features of Damrak look like a preview of what Amsterdam has to offer.
